A truly fulfilling sequel. Josef (sorry, Aaron) is back, baby, and he’s got a new arsenal of terrifyingly sincere personality quirks. Desiree Akhavan is in every way Duplass’s equal here, matching his freak with perfect execution. I can still hear Duplass yelling “mommy needs her juice” in quiet moments. Also I watched this movie for the first time, sat beside my mother and grandmother in a hotel bed after being evacuated from our homes due to wildfire, and anyway was not expecting Mark Duplass’s whole penis to make an appearance in that situation

Jesse 4.5

This is such a good sequel that builds off of the original concept without it ever becoming stale. Masterful writing keeps the tension strong throughout. I loved Creep, but I may enjoy watching this more because Sara is a much more dynamic and fun character than Aaron was in the original. Desiree Akhavan killed it.

Jesse 3.5

Typical 80's rom-com stuff. Rob Lowe's character didn't make sense coming out of Rob Lowe. Jim Belushi played a generational piece of shit to perfection. Elizabeth Perkins was the best part of the movie.

Felicia 4.5

I watched this movie because I saw an interview where Sam Neill was asked which of his movies he wished more people had seen. He answered that this was one he was always very fond of. After watching it, I completely understand why. You will never guess, not in a million years, even from the synopsis, what this movie is about. Once you do, you will be hit with a rush of simultaneous delight and bafflement. I suggest you go in blind and hang on.

Jesse 4.0

My friend Felicia said that Sam Neill wanted more people to watch this movie that he was in, so we did, and it was very good. Incredibly weird, funny, and SUPER British. One of the most British movies that I've ever seen.

Jesse 3.5

Basically an American version of Love Actually set in some kind of a nexus for hot people.

Felicia 3.5

LOOK I LIKED IT, OKAY!? I think if you want to experience the most immersive resident evil world without playing the games, these animated movies do it justice. This felt like playing RE3 but with the whole gang. Leon one-liners, a sewer level, and a huge wet monster. I don’t know what more you could ask for. Is it hilarious that it’s set in real actual Alcatraz? Yes. Does Chris’s VA sound like he’s seeing his lines for the very first time as he’s reading them off the sheet? Absolutely. Does the villain have the thinnest possible reason for trying to doom the world? Sure. But did any of that make me enjoy the avengers-style slow motion dodging of beastly appendages any less? Absolutely not. Sometimes you get to watch stuff just because it’s a cheesy fun time and that’s just fine. Neat, even.

Jesse 3.5

It's a fun summer camp movie. Not forging any new paths with the story but the characters and performances were all great. If you were a drama kid and really into musicals, it will probably hit half a star harder.

Deeply bizarre. Has obvious heart and characters I genuinely enjoyed, but gets SO egregiously weird in the third act that it left a meh taste in my mouth. Will Forte is unhinged in a way that made me feel like he was acting in a different movie. The marriage between charmingly strange and off-puttingly out-there didn’t totally mesh for me, but lots of fun moments and decent laughs. Would not have worked if it wasn’t Irish

Jesse 3.5

An Irish absurdist horror-comedy where the story is kind of an afterthought, but all of the actors are so funny that it doesn't really matter. You're just kind of along for the weird ride. Unnecessarily gross at times.

Jesse 5.0

This movie never gets old. This is probably the tenth time I've seen it and it's just as good as it was the first time. One of the great 80's movies even though it was made in 2016.

Four wholly unprepared adventurers who don’t actually know how to swim take a boat out 12 miles from shore, which sinks INSTANTANEOUSLY. Once in the water, the four people experiencing a life and death situation talk and laugh and joke and just kinda hang out in one spot, barely moving. One earth hour passes before a shark is even sighted. And when it is, their solution is to kinda just sit there and look around. And then look under the water. And then look above the water. And then look under the water, and then…sorry, I nodded off.  Also this movie is based on a true story. A true story which did not actually take place on or involve a reef in any way. Or a great white shark. Two stars for the cool shark footage. And hey…why did she give him a sausage?

Robin Williams had insane range. I knew that already, but I love to be reminded. Every actor in this movie was nearly as great. They don't really make comedies like this anymore.

It's just the perfect slasher movie.

Matthew Lillard

Jesse 3.5

Pretty funny. Recognized multiple memes that I did not know came from this movie. I wish that Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn had all of Jennifer Aniston's screen time. She just didn't fit the character she was playing.

Beff 4.5

Great commentary on growing up

Felicia 1.5

I’ll preface by saying that Wes Anderson is very hit or miss for me, and the misses are BIG WHIFFS. This was a miss. What a truly nothing movie. I meant it when I said I’m fully done with movies that are just about shitty little guys. It has that very 90’s trope of weirdly intimate relationships between students and teachers that starts and stays gross. I get that you’re not supposed to like Jason Schwartzman’s character, but I found him so hateable that I actively didn’t want to look at the screen. The dialogue is frustratingly trite, there’s zero substance here. You’re perfectly within your rights to tell me I just don’t get it, but I’m completely fine with that.

Mads is always a treasure. And what a range. Dark, funny, and full of heart. Elicited several full bodied yells from me, and lots of laughs. What a weird but nice time

Jesse 3.5

Very weird and dark but also very funny.

Jesse 1.5

Lot of visual poop jokes, lot of RV slowly rolling away, lot of cringey slang, lot of Cheryl Hines.

Jesse 3.5

I spend a of time imitating Werner Herzog whenever I watch his documentaries. Can't help it. Lots of very cool cave paintings, though. I was impressed with how good they were for being so old.

Jesse 4.0

I have vague memories of seeing parts of this when I was a kid but this is the first time I’ve watched it all the way through. Lot of weird sounds coming out of that little guy. Holds up pretty well!

Felicia 2.5

Whoever pitched Jesse Eisenberg as leading man in a comedy was wild for that. I mean I guess he was born to play an awkward, anxious teen finding himself in insane situations, but he is neither interesting nor charismatic enough to pull this off. Truly didn’t care if a single one of these people survived. But in fairness, I think I just missed the boat when this was every highschool shithead’s favorite movie in 2009.

Jesse 4.0

I truly thought that the meme of Woody Harrelson rubbing money in his crying eyes was from 1995's Money Train. As soon as I saw him lying down in this movie, I knew I was about to get Mandela'd. Also, the replica screen printed Warhol in that mansion was sick.

Jesse 3.5

Decent summer movie about teenaged shenanigans with a great soundtrack. Needed a lot more Bill Hader & Kristen Wiig.

Felicia 3.5

They made the animal faces get TOO SAD and it HURT me

Jesse 4.0

This is just a fun brain washer that knows exactly what it is. Very formulaic. Very dumb. No thinking required.

Felicia 4.5

Olivia Coleman earned her Oscar. Historical drama meets dark comedy meets doomed romance. Her and Rachel Weisz are a perfect pair

Jesse 4.5

One of the rare cases where I'm going to ding a film for not being long enough, but here we are. Everything felt necessary and interesting but then the ending was just kind of an abrupt fizzle to black. There was still more meat on the bone.

Jesse 3.0

All three of these stars are for the opening, which blew my mind, and literally everything else aside from the story. You can feel the quality of the film pouring out of it, but I just couldn't connect one single dot. It's probably one of those films that, if your attention lapses for a second, you lose the entire thread — and I have ADHD. I'll revisit it at some point and probably bring my rating up.

Casey 3.0

Parts of this movie were extremely beautiful, but it was pretty hard for me to follow. I’m usually entirely down for more abstract films that may or may not have a linear plot or no meaning at all, but parts were slow and lost my interest at times. I respect the film making aspect, the sets, the cinematography, and the long sweeping takes were all extremely impressive visually and technically, i just wish i was more captivated emotionally.

Felicia 3.0

Adam Scott saved this film in a lot of ways. It plays out as a pretty straightforward thriller and honestly would’ve worked better without the supernatural elements, which seemed pretty poorly executed. Like an idea that was never fully fleshed out. Entire characters felt like simple plot devices with several storylines ultimately left open or unexplained. Also wish I could fucking see anything.

Jesse 3.5

It was okay but messy. I got a whiff of folk horror every now and again, like spirit halloween folk horror, but it was mostly just Irish accents and a main character who was written too unlikable to ever possibly stick the landing on his arc.

Casey 3.0

I *would* drink mushroom milk from the man in the forest. I would also drink the uisce beatha.

Jesse 2.5

I had trouble cheering on team affluence in 2026 for some reason, but it was fun to see Carla Gugino in her first feature film role.

Jesse 0.5

I've seen this movie three times now. With each subsequent viewing, I am able to pay more attention to the finer details of one of the greatest train wrecks in cinematic history. The laughter that covered some of the dialogue in the other two viewings, over time, is now transitioning into seething contempt. The script is clearly awful and they gave it a $60 million dollar budget. You could make 240 indie films with $250k budgets for that. How many dreams died — how many filmmakers moved back home forever — so that we could watch Marky Mark phone in a performance so bad, it feels like he was doing it on a dare? Awful.

Jesse 3.5

I didn't really know what to expect other than, you know, a secret mall apartment. It turned out to be an interesting art history lesson about a little pocket of fledgling artists from Providence, Rhode Island in the early 2000's who were led by their art teacher into a fun thing for a bunch of weirdo art kids to do together. I would have definitely participated in my late teens without hesitation.

Casey 3.5

Fun. I want to expand on this concept.

Jesse 4.5

Robin Williams is the best. I miss this era of movies.

Casey 5.0

A classic imo

Jesse 4.5

Once I got over Tony Shalhoub's character looking exactly like the soup nazi from Seinfeld, I really loved this film. It's one of the better examples of how to use food as the centerpiece of a story. It also has a great cast that was firing on all cylinders.

Casey 5.0

Comfort movie. I love yelling

Jesse 3.5

This film is beautiful but I've never been much of a noir guy. I like the cinematography and the aesthetic, but the monotonous nature of the characters mixed with lots of voice-overs just ends up making me sleepy. That said, I still had a good time. The Cohens know how to deliver on a weird story.

Jesse 3.5

I had not seen this for a very long time and it's way more of a fever dream than I remembered. Some absolutely bonkers stuff going on here all wrapped up in sitcom packaging. It's a good time but a little long for what it is.

Felicia 4.5

The half star deduction is for the ending alone. I wanted them to be besties forever. What an unexpected joy. I didn’t know what more the “farting corpse movie” could be, but I gravely underestimated the beautiful story of love and friendship played out by quirky sidekicks Paul Danno and Daniel Radcliffe. What an earnestly brilliant, loving, sweet, hilarious pair they make. A genuine delight of a film

Jesse 4.0

This is one of the weirder movies that I've seen recently but it's the good kind of weird. Paul Dano and Danielle Radcliffe were both amazing. Not a big fan of the ending but I'll take it.

Jesse 4.0

Films like this remind of how lucky I was to land in a privileged life. This is a beautiful documentary but the synopsis made it sound like it was going to be a little more exciting than it is. Instead, it's a brutal slog through a brutal life. Worth the watch but I'll never watch it again.

Casey 5.0

Beautiful

Felicia 4.5

What a romp. Rachel McAdams is delightfully unhinged and it has just enough Sam Raimi grossness to illicit squeals of delight and repulsion

Jesse 3.5

The story is generic and predictable but the movie is saved by its performances — especially Rachel McAdams. She's a cheat code. Also, Sam Raimi really knows how to gross you out without going too far.

Jesse 3.5

I saw this a very long time ago and didn't remember a lot of it. Tonight, I was able to guess the exact release year based on clothing and some of the vernacular because this may be the most 2004 movie possible — right down to thinking that we could change people's minds using only common sense arguments and shame.

Jesse 5.0

Incredible documentary that highlights how easy it is to manipulate people using made-up mysticism, how easy it is to get high off your own supply, and also that it can be kind of nice and harmless when the grift isn't being perpetrated by a money-motivated sex pest. That seems pretty rare, though.

Casey 5.0

Brilliant. -connection and truth can be found through something false/made up. This is what art is, this is what religion is.  -people are gullible, but that gullibility stems from isolation and desperation. No one in this movie were bad people, just people looking for something more in life. They found clarity and some level of happiness through Kumare, whether he was real or not. That’s admirable  -by pretending to become a Guru he became one. He taught valuable lessons to people who needed it through performance art

Felicia 2.0

Like watching a Tumblr fan fiction from a desperately lonely little freak only less interesting. 2 stars only for the skin room

Jesse 2.5

This film was not good or bad. It was just kind of happening and it was happening for too long. It felt like watching someone jogging through a 2010's fanfic feed. It did look pretty and the anachronistic needle drops were kind of fun, but otherwise it was pretty forgettable.

Casey 4.0

Liked it way more than I thought I would. Need to rewatch

Felicia 5.0

What a delight of a film. Pure joy, genuinely impressive, such good laughs

Jesse 5.0

This movie is incredibly funny and I would be very surprised if it doesn't end up being in my top 5 for the year.

Jesse 3.5

I can't believe she never pulled out a ukulele. I was so sure it was going to happen. Anyway, it was still a pretty fun time. A relentless barrage of the the kind of awkwardness that makes you want to sink your head into your rib cage like a turtle, but also still pretty fun.

Jesse 3.5

Great music and an aptly timed reminder that people can be talked into going along with some truly wild shit with seemingly little motivation other than a sense of belonging. I also felt as though the film wanted me to share in some sort of reverence for Ann Lee as a foward-thinking pacifist and an angelic vessel of reason and equality, but unfortunately a grifter is a grifter and your boy is getting pretty tired of grifters.

Casey 4.0

This was beautiful and weird and fascinating.

Jesse 3.5

I had never heard of Walter Keane or Margaret Keane prior to watching this film, so I had no idea what I was in store for. I walked away with perhaps a new entry on my top 10 list of least favorite humans. I thought the over-the-top buffoonery was Christoph Waltz chewing up the scenery, but it turns out — after a bit of post-viewing research — that Walter Keane really was just a S-tier asshole with an absurd lack of shame. He would fit in nicely in the halls of congress.

Jesse 3.5

This was a silly and fun flick. Kind of reminded me of Gremlins in its tone, but campier, and way more Irish of course. Creature design was pretty good, too. You really need subtitles for some of the characters if you're not from Ireland. Drunk and mushy mouthed doesn't blend well with some of the stronger accents but it's still funny — even if you can't understand a word they're saying.

Jesse 4.0

My friend Felicia said it only works because Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling are so charming and she is correct. This movie felt like it was written by a 40 year old for his 14 year old self to enjoy. There is some weird age difference stuff going on that has skeeved me out in other movies — Licorice Pizza for example — but for whatever reason I just kind of ignored it. Probably because there's lots of other genuinely funny stuff and great writing that provides a lot of cloud-cover for the cringey stuff.

Jesse 1.5

This was straight up propaganda but I did enjoy it when the characters were stuck smiling awkwardly so that Lizzue McGuire's voice-over had time to finish. If this got released today instead of in 2002, people would accused it of being written by AI.

Jesse 3.0

This film does a good job of reminding you about the ridiculous number of hits that Frankie Valli was responsible for, but it also pulls out like every single roll-your-eyes trope possible from a music biopic. Then it filters everything through an Italianator 5000 until it's more of a satire than it is interesting. Like, it's really a fun piece of history that Joe Pesci was in the orbit of Frankie Valli, but also, it felt like his character in this movie was more of an understudy of Tommy DeVito from Goodfellas instead of a real person. Every character felt like that actually.

Jesse 2.0

Casey 5.0

Still as terrible and wonderful as the sun

Jesse 3.5

I have been itching to re-watch this again. It's not the greatest movie ever made but it is a fun "what-if" kind of a story. I think that it would have been better served if it was about another great band with less bangers. Because it's the Beatles, you're kind of left no choice but to do all of the hits and there are an absolutely absurd number of them. Having to go through every Beatles hit really eats into the time they have to tell an engaging story, and what little story there is gets dragged along like an anchor because of Lily James' very annoying and unrealistic character.

Jesse 3.5

This has more endings than Lord of the Rings and I think that having an end credit scene on a movie with a 168 minute runtime should be illegal.

Jesse 4.5

I had heard of The Dandy Warhols but not The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and this documentary makes it quite clear why that is.

Jesse 3.5

These people hated modern amenities but were obsessed with hotels for some reason.

Jesse 4.0

Beautiful movie and I loved all of the sound design. Folk horror usually has a barrier to entry and its foreknowledge of the lore, which I don't really have, and the film doesn't attempt to educate me at all. I'm sure someone with deep knowledge of this particular lore is picking up on everything, but I was just there kind of enjoying the sounds and visuals but none of the story.

A clockwork of pain and loss grinding away at a glacial pace until the second hand lands on the one of a busker's beat. "And the reason is you." --Hoobastank Chuck is an artist dead on the vine, his dreams of dancing dashed by math that never lies and a brain too sharp to let go of his grandfather's solid logic. His life's meaning gets kicked and stepped on until it's just a couple of memories compressed down into a scar on his hand and a blink-and-you-miss-it vaseline smeared vision of a sauce-stained spoon clanging against a pot along to Dance Hall Days in his bubbe's kitchen. That's me in a dank basement in Northern Virginia, 1987, singing nonsense into a tape recorder that doesn't have a tape in it while my Dad strums his guitar. His art died in Vietnam, but he gave me my first and his last guitar — my first of many scars — and let just enough light escape to streak across the sky. Instead of going to the dance hall, I just watched the ruby cinder on the end of a cigarette burn away on my frosty front porch back home. I'm not much of a dancer, but not every artist is meant to dance with their feet. When I walked back inside from that porch, it was to go sit behind a computer because my dance hall has always been behind a monitor and that's where I have never been afraid to go back in to cut a rug. On every social media thing I have an account on, and on my personal site (https://jesse.id/), it says "I love and support art and artists of all kinds." Maybe I'm Chuck and I haven't come across my drummer. Maybe I'm behind the drums and Chuck just hasn't walked by yet. Maybe I'm clapping along to Chuck and the busker from the crowd. Maybe I'm hiding just behind the crowd and watching the spectacle unfold through a thicket of bodies bending around in time. I'll just keep stopping at every busker that I come across until I find out, with today's troubadour being Mike Flanagan, backed up by his ever-present troupe of dancing theater kids. Everything else is the excruciating waiting. Great movie.

I expected to enjoy this because of the Guillermo Del Toro influence, but I’ve been disappointed by GDT in the past, storyline-wise. That was not the case here. This is the first faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein I’ve ever seen, and it was exquisite. Jacob Elordi impressed me so much with his performance as the creature, and Oscar Isaac put his whole ass into Frankenstein, literally. I could take issue with the CG on the animals, but given the violence, I’m alright with that small disconnect from reality for those scenes. I absolutely adored everything about this movie.

Jesse 5.0

I considered taking off half a star because of how bad the animals looked, but it may have actually been an artistic choice, and I appreciated it at times. So we'll just go with this is a perfect film.

Felicia 4.5

I found this movie when I was in the perfect mood for exactly this premise. I have such a soft spot for reluctant father figures, and the dynamic between Martin and Mister hits it perfectly. Nick Damici and Jim Mickle are one of my favorite writer/director teams, really fleshing out characters and backstory without too much obvious exposition. The main plot is lacking a bit of originality/substance, but it almost doesn’t matter. It’s the characters and their relationships that really make this story shine.

I really wish she didn't name that kid Americus, though. Every time a character said it — and they said it a LOT — I audibly cringed. Here are the characters' names. Novalee Nation Americus Nation Forney Hull Willy Jack Pickens Moses Whitecotten Sister Husband Mr. Sprock Lexie Coop Brownie Praline Maybe all of the tragedies befalling the citizens of this little Oklahoma town are because of some kind of, like, Bermuda Triangle situation, where everyone in the country with a super silly name is corralled to be culled by nature — or a train.

Still a banger.

As far as expectations go, watching this film felt like opening a dumpster and seeing your favorite framed painting sitting atop of a bunch of dirty, wet bags. I honestly don't think I've seen a single Irish movie with music at its center that I haven't liked. This is probably now my favorite of that ilk, which is high praise considering Once and Sing Street are both on that list as well.

Felicia 3.5

I really wanted to love this movie. And I want to be clear, it was solid. I did very much enjoy myself. But a combination of Michael B Jordan playing his own twin mixed with the slowest of slow burns before blood started actually hitting the fan kept me from becoming fully invested in the way I was hoping for, considering all the praise it received. Not a bad flick, I just wanted more from it

Jesse 5.0

This was incredible.

Jesse 3.5

I liked this more after seeing it again. The 3D is extremely good.

Jesse 4.5

Very charming and beautifully done. I haven't seen enough Italian films.

Jesse 3.5

This is one of those films that I will probably need to watch a few times to fully grasp what's going on and when I do, it will probably garner another star on the rating. Great acting and visuals do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Jesse 3.5

This holds up better than a lot of other movies from the early oughts. It's just turn-your-brain-off dumb and fun.

Jesse 2.5

Historically awful CG and a deus ex machina kid that speaks and interacts with adults like he's a 60 year old scholar, which happens to be one of my biggest pet peeves. This movie just exudes lazy money-grab energy.

Jesse 5.0

So, I did a weird thing. I decided that I wanted to take a silent film I'd never seen before, and replace all of the music with a modern playlist — just songs that I liked. I wanted to do it blind, because some friends and I take turns picking stuff to watch, and they had done some playlists for me to play with my audio visualizer program (shoutout to Synesthesia) So, I looked for movies with little to no dialog on Kagi (Google replacement) and found The Last Laugh. Then, I asked Kagi Assistant (AI) to give me the emotional beats of The Last Laugh without spoiling anything. Then I told the AI assistant to give me a list of songs with runtimes that would match up to the beats. The AI spit back a predictably weird and bad playlist, but I took the track lengths and went to Spotify to find songs in my big playlist that matched the lengths. I chose songs I loved, and also kind of matched the emotional beats that Kagi Assistant told me would work. When my pick came up, I played The Last Laugh and hit play on the YouTube playlist I had created. I used YouTube instead of Spotify because I was playing it in a browser, and I like the player better in the browser. It all lined up SO WELL, and for the first time in my life, I actually enjoyed watching a silent film, and my friends did, too. I think maybe I invented a new thing to do with AI? Anyway, I'm sure this film rules even with its original soundtrack, because it tells its story very effectively and has some cool visual tricks up its sleeve to do it. It's always so cool to see what filmmakers with very little technology could do with what they had. I really liked it, but the new arty thing I was trying actually working made me LOVE it. What a fun little experience with my friends. Here's the playlist: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KfwXac4ftI&list=PLTISR4D_YCTxOhB-dx_mwq065E87lS8xb

A gang of poor kids with cartoon accents throwing salient shade at the Bourgeoisie for a couple of hours. Coulda been woice!

Jesse 4.0

Good overall, a little slow, and probably would have benefitted greatly from casting unknowns. The casting itself was a distraction and that sucks. With IP like Dune, you don't need star power; you need only cast the perfect people for their roles to carry the movie.

Loved it as much as the first time I watched it. The little kid was the best part

Happy Gilmore's darkest timeline. With no hockey or golf in his life to channel his rage through, he resorts to violence against doors and bathrooms. Somehow, I had never seen this before, and went in totally blind other than knowing it was a respected role for Adam Sandler. Did not expect the barrage of non sequiturs, but that's my kind of humor, so all of them landed. I had a really good time!

Jesse 4.0

My friend Beth couldn't watch a movie with us tonight, so we picked a movie she would absolutely hate, and I told her I would do this review in her honor. Here goes... Dude, no. Oh no, no no no. Ahhhhghhh! Not the water breathing helmet! Why is he typing anything other than AAAAAAAAAAAAA? *falls asleep* hhhHuh? Bethcheck. I love them... what a sweet little alien guy.

Why was the bee the only bug that was normal? All the rest of the bugs looked like people/hybrids. All three of these stars are for the Don Bluth sparkle.

Jesse 4.5

I heard Jesse Eisenberg talking about making this film on the Scriptnotes podcast. It's a great listen. Kieran Culkin nails his character, as expected, and it's crazy that Jesse Eisenberg wrote this movie with the intent to play Benji himself. Just an insane "What If?" trivia question.

Jesse 4.5

Still awesome!

Jesse 5.0

This one hits quite a lot harder just 10 years out from its release due to the emergence of large language models Kool-Aid manning their way into the zeitgeist. Caleb only needed to ask Ana how many R's are in Strawberry, which is the real Turing test of our time. (Ask your favorite chat bot how many R's are in Strawberry)

Jesse 2.5

I don't know what Ye Gods! means, but I can't forgive its gratuitous overuse in this classic portrayal of a bad Iowaska trip. Also, once I realized the lead looks and acts like Kenneth Copeland, I couldn't unsee it.

Jesse 3.5

Some pretty big tonal shifts, but they were funny enough to forgive.

Jesse 5.0

I'm upgrading this from a 4 to a 5 because when I rated it, I hadn't seen it in awhile, and I forgot how good this movie is. It's actually perfect and has a once in a lifetime cast. It might hit different now that I'm older as well. One thing that doesn't hit different is the ick factor at the end. Jeeeeesus child pageantry is bleak. I wanted to rinse my eyes out with something stronger than bleach. Now I'm off to go looking for the screenplay because I just want to see how the scenes with the grandpa were written and celebrate them.

Jesse 3.0

This is literally my least favorite movie poster of all time. It just looks like the first attempt from a kid who picked Paint Shop Pro over Photoshop. I've hated it since the 90's. Also, this film's entire plot hinges on a next level gaslighting attempt — that Rachael Leigh Cook is hideous until she takes her glasses off. Fun fact: The child actor who plays the young version of Nicolas Cage in National Treasure looks a lot like Rachael Leigh Cook. Don't believe me? Check it out. It's the first scene.

Jesse 4.0

Just as dumb as it was in 2004, and just as fun.

Jesse 4.5

My list of great coming-of-age stories about awkward and/or broken kids, sorted by the decade they took place. 50's - Stand By Me 60's - Dead Poets Society 70's - Dazed and Confused 80's - Lucas 90's - Kids 00's - Dìdi 10's - Eighth Grade 20's - ?

Jesse 5.0

One of my favorite movies, don't know why, but it is.

Jesse 2.5

I never want to own a yappy dog; to scream at the wind is in their nature and their nature is antithetical to my own. Sure, I can enjoy their company, but it has a same-second expiration date if they make loud noises without reason. Similarly, the flower girl character is the kind of loud and obnoxious that bothers me on a deep level. So when the story breaks dystopian, I actually kind of found myself relieved that she was finally tucked away for a bit. The other problem is that I also find the classic brand of snobby opulence generally offensive, so I couldn't find a connection with any of the supporting characters either.

Jesse 3.5

Mona Lisa and Fuzz were both very fun characters, and how they interacted with each other was great. Probably not a classic, but well worth the watch.

Jesse 2.5

Jesse 5.0

An amazing documentary about a pocket of human beings that, and I mean this with all emphasis, are all BAT SHIT INSANE. This family is what the Whitaker family from West Virginia (YouTube it) could be if one of them was accidentally an extremely talented artist. This family is like a gravity well of evolutionary surrealism compressing runoff genetic traits — that have somehow withstood the barrage of time — down into a tiny and flawed pearl of artistic talent; the ball of the pen that Robert Crumb wields masterfully to create beautiful drawings of some pretty fucked up subject matter that he hides behind the aegis of freedom of speech and satire. If you told me this film was about a family of serial killers, I wouldn't be caught off guard.

Jesse 2.5

Not the intended audience lol

Jesse 3.5

Very dark and very funny.

Jesse 3.0

When watching movies with my friends, sometimes I pull out the snarky little, "Hey... What is this about?" It felt like the third act was from some other movie, but it was well done and stuck its emotional landing. The first hour was just kind of there.

Jesse 5.0

Incredible storytelling in this documentary. It starts with a group of friends skateboarding and acting like, honestly, the kind of dumb-ass kid that I was myself. I immediately connected with all of the characters. Then it veers into other aspects of the kids' lives and their early adulthood, and by the end, it delivers a very poignant message through a megaphone. Highly recommend you check it out.

Jesse 3.5

Absolutely the most confusing and unrealistic business model of all time. Jennifer Coolidge is responsible for all of the stars I give to this because without her weird quips and facial ticks carrying every scene, this mess of a movie would just suck.

Jesse 5.0

Watched it with Rifftrax this time around, and loved it a lot. Highly recommend.

Jesse 2.5

One of the worst soundtracks I've ever heard; ruined nearly every scene that featured a needle drop, and there were a lot of them. Also, Julia Roberts was great, but her character kind of sucked and made it hard to care about her relationships.

Casey 2.0

I thought this movie was so annoying. Two stars for how handsome Hugh Grant is in this.

Jesse 4.5

average lesbian and bi girl relationship fall out

Jesse 3.5

It's 20 minutes too long but it was still a good time.

Jesse 4.0

Haven't seen this since it came out, but I remembered liking it. It stands up really well, and the cultural stuff lands even harder now than it did then, which is sad.

Jesse 3.0

Good performances all around, important subject matter, but if you told me that a large chunk of the film was slowed down 25%, I would believe you. Watching this felt like being dragged behind a bicycle.

Jesse 4.0

I remember not liking this movie when I was a kid, probably because I had ADHD and it was 3 hours long, but it's pretty poignant to the adult version of me. I also didn't like broccoli, but now I eat it almost every day. Tastes change, I suppose.

Jesse 4.0

Hugh Grant's performance is insane in that he's literally just being Hugh Grant, but as the context and tension builds, you realize that his character is using every charming micro expression as a fulcrum to wedge confusion and fear between their splintering faith and belief. He's basically a more sinister version of Loki from Dogma, talking Nuns into running away from their convents, but if he had way more time and a H.H. Holmes style murder castle with a Barbarian basement nestled into picturesque Utah (presumably) mountainside.

Jesse 5.0

Still a hilarious little gut punch.

Jesse 3.5

This is one of those films that I think of as a dark comedy, but I wonder if it's actually that, or if I'm just interpreting it incorrectly because I've been desensitized through 30ish years of Internet exposure? Anyway, it's real dark and I laughed a lot. I thought it was a 4 in my heart, but it didn't feel right in my tummy until I knocked it down to a 3 1/5. It's somewhere in between. Better than average but not great.

Jesse 3.5

The premise is pretty unique. Solid watch if you like legal dramas.

Jesse 5.0

Feels like a crime that I waited this long to see Alien: Romulus, but it was worth the wait. This movie did one of those screechy and smokey burnout turns right into its parking spot on my favorite Alien movie list. It will live there at #3 forever, probably. This one is probably going to be considered a classic for the current generation of teenagers, and I wouldn't blame them if they said it was the best movie in the series. I just can't agree due to nostalgia.

Jesse 3.0

You know when someone tells you an inside joke from another friend group, and without the required context, it sounds like a non sequitur so you just awkwardly stare at one another for a few seconds? This film was like that for me. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about the film or its source content, so I mistook the main character for a literal monster, because everything about it felt like a horror. The writing, direction, and cinematography set it up like a horror, so when that expectation was set, I suspended disbelief and viewed it like a non-fiction story. The main character transforms into a dog and brutally mauls a screaming cat, which is horrific, but also kind of completely normal for a horror movie. The problem is that the metaphor was so heavy-handed that it was masked by the horror elements of the movie, so the end just kind of felt confusing, underwhelming, and unsatisfying. Now, if the title was "Pup Fiction" instead...

Jesse 3.5

Honestly a lot more fun than I was expecting it to be. It heavily "borrowed" a lot of its vibe from the Avengers films, but ultimately, I thought that they landed the sleigh. Not quite a new holiday classic for me, but I'm sure it's going to be for a bunch of zoomers, or whatever the current generation of kids is.

Jesse 3.5

The premise is incredibly dumb, but it delivered a decent number of laughs!

Jesse 5.0

Kind of a perfect movie. No notes.

WARNING: Heavy spoilers ahead. The problem with plots like this is that you need an incredibly dim-witted Dad with zero paternal instincts for a suspension of disbelief to occur. Richard, the Dad, wrote a book about the sole-surviving member of a suicide cult, and then began dating her. The wife he's separated from, played by Alicia Silverstone, kills herself when he asks for a full divorce. Kudos for that at least, because it catches you off guard like Drew Berrymore being the first to go in Scream. Anyway, their mother's death absolutely destroys his two children. They don't really know the new girlfriend Grace that well — the cult survivor. Richard ho-hums the whole suicide thing and tells the kids he's going to marry Grace, whom they hate and blame for their mother's suicide. He doesn't seem to care how they feel, or feel any kind of obligation to give them time to grieve. Then Richard takes Grace and the to kids on a trip to a ridiculously secluded lodge for Christmas, where the plan is for Grace to be left alone with the kids for a few days during a blizzard. Before he takes the only vehicle they have back into the city, he makes sure to give Grace — the suicide cult girl — a loaded gun to protect herself and the kids with. The older kid gives Grace hot cocoa at the end of the first act after giving her nothing but a cold shoulder, she happily gulps the drugged cocoa down and falls asleep, and then all of their stuff goes missing overnight. That is when I basically sussed out the ending, because in lieu of some kind of supernatural phenomenon, the kids were the only ones that could have done it. So I was just kind of sitting there for another hour watching an unrealistic scenario unfold in the way that I thought it would. I think this could be an entertaining watch for people who don't see the end coming, but the thing is, I usually don't. I was surprised by every popular twist ending that you can think of, which leads me to believe that this script was just under-baked.

Jesse 3.5

Bummer in disguise.

Jesse 3.0

Wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Would have given it an extra half star had the movie not barfed exposition out of a little girl via a literal cut scene, crappy old film filter and all, right at the end. It was like the writer was about to be late for something and had to jot down a bunch of stuff before leaving the house, and then they just kind of forgot to go back and fix it. Fun gore and monster design, though.

Jesse 4.5

Still a banger.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time but I didn’t put it on my favorites because I don’t want to be judged

Jesse 4.5

Kept me captivated the whole time, and it felt real, which is difficult for a courtroom drama to pull off these days. Great acting from everyone, but the kid was really impressive.

Jesse 4.0

Being alive during this period of time sucked so much.

Jesse 4.5

Some excellent storytelling going on in this one, and the trailer does it a grave injustice — definitely check it out.

Jesse 4.5

Still holds up.

Jesse 3.5

It aspired to pass Heathers in the 80's girl dark comedy lane, but it couldn't quite get there. Still a fun watch with some decent gags, though.

Jesse 4.5

I actually loved this movie. It did something that I didn't think was possible and showed me things I haven't seen in a vampire movie before, and did so while also leaning on a lot of the old tried and true—but freshened up—tropes. The pacing was perfect. Jordan Preston Carter put the second and third act squarely on his shoulders. I was really impressed by his performance, and the writing for that character was equally good. If they put him in a spinoff series as the lead, I would be a day one viewer.

Jesse 0.5

Hey this was really awful and they made Tommy Davidson so ashy that I thought he was Chris Kattan at first.

Jesse 3.5

First time I've seen this one, which is a crime against the classics, I know. I did think it was good, but it has the same pacing problems that a lot of the films in this generation have. It felt too long by a good 30 minutes, kind of like The Deer Hunter and The Exorcist. It's one of those things where I would have probably given it five stars if I saw it opening night, but there is a gulf of innovation between 1968 and 2024, and I think I'm spoiled by the more recent advancements in storytelling.

Jesse 4.5

Better the second time!

Jesse 5.0

Still rules.

Jesse 3.5

One of the better ones in the series.

Jesse 4.5

The aunt steals the show, and had to be the easiest casting decision of all time.

Jesse 4.0

I haven't seen this since I was a kid, but it holds up! Bruce Willis felt incredibly out of place, but as things get campier, he definitely adds to the fun.

Jesse 3.5

I liked it, but I think I've seen one too many films like this. If I saw it in 2007, I probably would have given it 4 stars, but I wasn't blown away by it tonight. Well made, though.

Jesse 5.0

This movie is about what is going on in my head at all times, except if I took this stuff, the hot version of me wouldn't want to go outside either. We'd just be taking turns doing the same shit inside every day. Sleeping for a week sounds nice, though. Wait, am I depressed?

Jesse 5.0

I just really love this incredibly dumb movie.

Jesse 3.5

Anyone but Nicholas Cage and this would probably have been a 4 1/2 for me. His character just clashed with the overall tone of the movie so much. He was acting in a way that felt like he was trying to see how much he could get away with, and the director just let him get away with literally everything. Just imagine if you swapped out Buffalo Bill for The Joker in Silence of the Lambs, and that is Longlegs, which sucks because Maika Monroe killed it as Agent Harker. I just wish I could see it with a more serious antagonist.

Jesse 4.0

Fun one! It was weird that I have never heard of this movie before tonight because it's in my lane, but I'm really glad I went in blind.

Jesse 5.0

Robin Williams plays Adrian Cronauer; a Vietnam radio DJ who lands himself a cushy gig at the armed forces radio station in the relatively peaceful capital city of South Vietnam, Saigon. It's loosely based on a true story, and fun fact, Pat Sajak (Wheel of Fortune) was the DJ who replaced Cronauer after he was discharged. I haven't seen this one in a very long time — probably a few decades — but it holds up very well. Even though there are a lot of racist jokes, they fit the period, and when the racism goes too far over the top, the perpetrator is an asshole grunt that looks like he wandered in from a neighboring Troma film shoot. They could have put a mummified Cro-Magnon in a military uniform and it wouldn't have been much different. Throughout the film, Cronauer is clearly battling back urges to scream out in frustration about the situation in Vietnam, which would have undoubtedly been echoed by most of the servicemen listening. When he finally does start acting out, you desperately want to dap him up through the screen somehow. However, because it's Robin Williams in this role, it also stabs you in the heart every time you see Cronauer attempting to swallow his overwhelming sadness and rage because he feels a responsibility to deliver laughs to people who need him. It's not so true to Robin Williams' actual life that it ruins the movie, but it is so real that it makes you feel those moments of sadness that much more. This one's an all-timer.

Jesse 2.5

It was very nice to look at in general, except that the CG that took me out of the film every time it appeared on screen. It felt like I was watching R-rated Goosebumps, but without the fun parts of the R rating.

Jesse 5.0

On my top 5 list of all time.

Jesse 4.0

Are you too good for your home!? Answer me!

Jesse 4.5

Master class in showing not telling. I immediately sought out the script and wasn't super surprised that it's only 68 pages. It eschews a lot of the cardinal rules of screenwriting, and that's always fun. An annoying number of jump scares. I get it, but it's just... not everything that could be a jump scare has to be a jump scare. It just ever-so-slightly takes me out of the movie because in those moments, I can hear the writer more than the character. Otherwise, a pleasure to experience. I'm getting older and it's getting harder to show me things I haven't seen before, but this movie did just that. Good times.

Jesse 2.5

It's just okay. Badly miscast.

Jesse 4.0

I watched this in the theaters and then went home and made a 22 slide PowerPoint about how much worse it is than the game. Look, by all accounts, this is a videogame movie. It looks shockingly decent. That is everything that is good about it. This movie feels like it was made by someone who LOVED playing Silent Hill 2, but also didn’t understand it AT ALL. All of the metaphor is completely lost. James’ character is given the hero treatment and his entire reason for existing in Silent Hill is rewritten to shit. A weird cult storyline is added to tie the movie plots together but also takes away from the game through-line by re-writing Mary as a character. And don’t even get me STARTED on the whole “James IS pyramid head” business. Genuinely, don’t watch this. I watched this so you don’t have to. I’ll give you my entire PowerPoint presentation instead

Jesse 0.5

This sucked to an unusual degree.

Felicia 2.5

Honestly? Boring. Robert Eggers went from mer-usseys, lobster monologues, and jorking it to scrimshaw to letting a Skarsgard painfully drone on at 2 miles per hour. It’s frankly not anywhere near weird or horny enough for Eggers. Nosferatu is already bad Dracula fanfic, we did nothing here to make that actually compelling

Jesse 2.0

Made me laugh several times, but I don't think it was supposed to. Felt like I was in the stands at the over-acting Olympics.

Jesse 3.5

Too long and the premise is a little dumb but it had some fun moments.

Jesse 5.0

This remains one of the best written movies that I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, you should see it — even if you're not into aliens. It's just a well-constructed film, with beautiful cinematography, and has a fantastic score.

Jesse 3.5

The main vampire is in the Epstein files

Jesse 5.0

Re-watched this with a couple of friends who had never seen it, and they didn't know the premise in advance. It was fun listening to them figure things out in real time.

Jesse 3.5

I was a huge fan of CKY when I was a teenager, watched all of those, watched all of Jackass, and all of the movies. There is a sophomoric part of my soul that I keep expecting to leave with age, but it hasn't yet. This was mostly a clip show with some of the best bits they've done, which is great, but it's not worthy of a feature in the age of YouTube where I've seen these clips in nearly these exact arrangements already. The new stuff is mostly funny but there are some real clunkers. I am glad that everybody got one last payday and nobody died.

Felicia 4.5

I really hope it’s not lost on Gillian Anderson (and I don’t think it is) that starring in a film about someone’s queer awakening is such a full circle moment for the entire generation of less than straight and questioning kids she helped usher in to that knowledge. Hannah Einbinder is all of us.

Felicia 3.5

If you love Wet Hot American Summer, you’ll love this. As someone who’s kind of meh about it, I don’t find this hilarious so much as silly. It’s a group of friends playing together. Which is nice and wholesome. I don’t think every joke lands, I think it’s taking a lot of big swings, and I think the premise is fucking stupid, which is the point. But I can still feel the joy and the excitement from the people who made it, which is really heartwarming, and that made watching it with a group of funny friends all the better

Jesse 4.0

This is now my second favorite comedy of the year next to Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie. Like anything else David Wain has made (Wet Hot American Summer), you'll probably either find the absurdity incredibly funny or incredibly exhausting. I had no clue John Slattery could be funny and it had a kind of dazzling effect. His character was the glue that held the entire thing together.

Felicia 4.0

Really enjoyed this. I saw a review saying it’s better than any of the Jurassic World movies and I fully agree (having only seen one of them). It harkens to Jurassic Park not only in content, but it effectively captures that nostalgic spirit of the 80’s/90’s sci-fi adventure summer blockbuster. And great news, y’all (slight spoiler), the dog lives!

Jesse 3.5

It was entertaining but it felt like I was watching a kind of badly written movie that was made thirty years ago. The portrayal of technology, in particular, was dripping with boomer. Overall, there were hints of Spielberg but the precision of his filmmaking has waned badly. The wheels aren't completely off yet but the stagecoach is wobbling badly.

Casey 3.5

If it’s doing what I think it’s doing, I’m into it. Otherwise it was a mess.

Felicia 3.5

Bizarrely fascinating

Jesse 5.0

This is an incredible documentary that covers one of the last periods of time in America that you could hold an event like this without being sued into the ground by its contestants. Every one of the people featured is an insane Texas caricature ready to torture themselves over a shitty $15k Nissan truck. Most of them want to immediately sell the truck to fix personal life problems that would be solved by like, the basic tier of a socialism subscription.

Felicia 4.0

It was cute. Tried a little too hard to make me cry. Still don’t care about the MCU

Felicia 3.0

I thought this was gonna be a fun goofy time but it was kinda just a weirdly dark scifi about people being forced to confront past trauma. The vibes were off

Jesse 3.5

This looked exactly like Batman & Robin, which was very distracting once I realized Joel Schumacher was the director of both films. I hadn't seen it since the 90's and it was much darker than I remembered.

Casey 4.0

I love these stupid, sexy ensemble 80s movies

Felicia 3.0

I would watch an entire movie about Michael Ian Black and Bradley Cooper’s characters’ relationship

Jesse 4.0

A great tribute to all of the problematic 70's and 80's summer camp movies I grew up watching. Also, it's clearly just an excuse for a bunch of friends to get together and have fun making a really dumb movie.

Felicia 4.0

Rewatched this recently. I think the first time i tried, I wasn’t quite the degenerate niche horror nerd with a proclivity towards tentacles that I am today. This is so fun. Eldritch horror at its best, deeply strange and unusual, and the perfect excuse to honor the memory of Sam Neill, the most in his element and clearly having an absolute blast.

Jesse 3.5

This was a wild ride. The tone felt very David Lynch to me. So over the top that it crossed from horror into comedy. RIP Sam Neill.

Casey 4.5

So much fun. This is scary Never Ending Story. Everyone who watched this movie is part of the story and it might be the reason why this reality is cursed

I didn’t expect to like this, but I actually loved it. I know this is one of Shakespeare’s most fantastical plays, and wildly silly, but oddly digestible for the bard. Also come on with the cast. Stanley Tucci, Christian Bale, Michelle Pfeiffer? Sam Rockwell’s most stirring performance. Also I’m in love with Kevin Kline.

Today I learned this play is where the Wedding March music came from. Thanks subtitles!

Yucky. Ick. Eww. Listen it’s an Evil Dead movie. I always go in thinking “maybe this one will be just kind of a normal horror movie but with some Evil Dead stuff but then Sam Raimi himself pops out of the screen and spits in my mouth. But hey, this one is pretty solid tbh. Where has Souheila Yacoub been hiding!? Incredible performance, truly. She deserves a spot amongst the final girl greats. Also just felt like this one had more of a plot line to follow than they usually do, and I appreciated being given clear designations of who to root for and who could maybe be set on fire and that would be fine. Some moments of levity were greatly appreciated eye bleach, and a little nod to the big man Brucie that made me smile. Also genuinely fun and impressive cinematography, and I’m not usually someone who gives a shit about that stuff. The continuous shot of Alice crawling through the house as chaos unfolds around her was a blast. But we GOTTA stop with the dog stuff. It’s 2026. That’s enough.

Not nearly as bad as I expected it to be

Jesse 3.5

I saw this when it came out and I was very disappointed, but as has been the case with many movies from the early 2000's that I've revisited recently, I enjoyed it much more on a rewatch. I think I was just on one in the early oughts.

Jesse 4.5

One of the better metaphors for religion that I've seen. The visuals in 3D were really great, top tier as far as that goes — especially near the end.

Watching this for a second time made me like it even more. It’s interesting how you can dip into a story over and over again over the course of your life and perceive it differently every time, not because the story is different, but you’re different. I remember feeling like I was floating on a cloud after finishing the book, confused but also simmering in the idea that truth is subjective. I was mystified by the idea that the book was not telling me what the real story was, I got to decide. I was given permission by the author to choose how I experienced Pi’s story and how I would carry it with me. As I grow older and life in this world becomes more and more absurd the lesson that your personal mythology shapes your lived experience hits home even more.

If you love niche art competitions based on arbitrary table setting rules pioneered by the trad wives of yore, and now just annoying technicalities getting in the way of Karens and anti-Karens getting ribbons for their Michael's hauls, then this is the doc for you. (The art is actually great. I'm all the way in on this culture now.)

Casey 4.5

Absolutely loved this and everyone in it. Maybe I’m thinking too deeply about it, but Judy Chicago’s installation piece “The Dinner Party” kept coming to mind while watching this documentary. While the tone of this movie is whimsical and factious, these tables are truly works of art and expression for these people. It was so nice to see a spotlight on their passion and dedication.

Idk man, if you’re horny for Nolen then maybe you love it but this is 3 agonizingly long hours of every possible major celebrity refusing to communicate. We get it Odysseus, you’re waiting for your moment, but  you could’ve shaved an hour and a half off the run time by making better decisions (I realize this is based on the epic poem, but not everything needs to be adapted). I loved it when monsters were yoinking guys in the air or when witches were turning Odysseus’s men into animorphs, but mostly this movie was people running on beaches and being tossed around by water. Even the fights were anticlimactic, because we already know Odysseus is going to win. It’s literally called The Odyssey, he’s kinda THE guy. Anyway yeah it’s fine. Obviously beautiful but I couldn’t be arsed.

What the heeellllllllll

Jesse 5.0

I think that this is one of the best post-conversion 3D movies and just a fantastic movie in general. It gets better with every viewing. The only flaw is the inclusion of Jared Leto but at least he fits the role.

Casey 5.0

Absolutely beautiful on every level

Felicia 3.5

This is one of those “it was good but I can’t tell if I liked it” movies. It’s immediately creepy, atmospheric, and wildly unsettling, the sets are incredibly effective, the cast is stacked, and it certainly doesn’t watch like a 20 year old’s directorial debut. All that said, I think the scares are more effective before the film shows its whole ass. It’s somehow over explained while also not explaining itself at all. A heavy handed metaphor for mental health or nothing of the sort? Unclear. The film had me while it was rooted in the tense uncertainty of the setting and lost me when it hard veered into the fantastical and never looked back. Did I hate the experience? Absolutely not. Did I enjoy it? I don’t know! Maybe? That’s the best I can do. Like a Reddit creepypasta brought to life by a skilled director, it still leaves a “what did I just experience?” taste in your mouth. If that’s your thing, you’ll love it. If it’s not, you’ll probably be in the same boat as me.

Jesse 4.0

I have never seen anything quite like this. The visuals were perfect, the setting drove crazy levels of tension, but the story started to limp pretty badly in the third act for me. Still a great movie.

Casey 4.5

I need to blog about this one. So much to say

Felicia 5.0

After all these years, “I promised them women”’is still the scariest line I’ve ever heard in a horror movie

Jesse 2.5

I have tried watching Twin Peaks a few times and it never quite grabs me. Watching this film felt like I was watching a more rushed and disjointed version of Twin Peaks. Great performances, especially from Naomi Watts, but it's just not my thing.

Felicia 3.5

A little less novel than the original now that we know the family secret and the consequences thereof, but still a competent horror comedy. Even more vibrato screams, satisfying violence, and femme fatale badassery. A fresh take for an unexpected sequel, even if the film basically tells you the ending mid-way through. And the horror icon cameos are a nice little bonus

Jesse 3.5

It's essentially what I thought it was going to be. Samara Weaving screaming bloody murder and lots of bloody murder. It was also nice to see Kathryn Newton again. She pops up in a lot of stuff like, notably Lisa Frankenstein and Halt & Catch Fire.

Jesse 4.5

Every time I see Harry Connick Jr., I get sad he never played Gambit in a live action X-Men movie. Also, even though all of the computer and hacking stuff is very stupid, I still really like this movie.

Felicia 4.5

Went into this thinking it was gonna have teen horror vibes but hoo boy, this one earned its R rating. The violence was quick and jarring. A loud theatrical experience. Also 10/10 skittering. Upsetting in every way. But that’s a good thing.

Jesse 5.0

Incredible everything. I was so distracted by a small music store needing 5 employees that I missed Andy Richter until the credits. That’s on me though. Inde Navarrette would get an Oscar for her performance in a just world.

Jesse 3.0

It remains mostly neutral in its opinions. The director doesn't really put his thumb on the scale or let his own thoughts seep into the narrative too much other than a kind of overarching cloud of despair that hangs over nearly every frame. This one is for people who know next to nothing about AI. As a software engineer who closely follows the progress of the technology, there wasn't really anything for me here.

Jesse 3.5

This was incredibly cheesy but also a good time. True 90's action brainrot. There is a moment about halfway in when the movie's budget gets switched on and some pretty impressive visuals ensue. It becomes clear at that point why all of the actors are in the "that guy" hall of fame. They spent all of their money on a cool looking monster and gore cannons.

Casey 3.0

Fun. Felt like a Doctor Who episode

Felicia 4.0

I’ve seen gameplay of the source material and was skeptical of how they were going to make a feature length film out of repeating the same loop over and over again while spotting the differences. But they really did it! It didn't feel dragged out or repetitive. I found myself playing along and yelling “ANOMALY” when I spotted something. Definitely pleasantly surprised with this sleeper hit

Casey 4.0

This spooked me good

Felicia 4.0

Wes Anderson is pretty hit or miss for me. I find his films breathtakingly stunning to look at, but the dialogue is halting and off-putting 90% of the time. This one has a lot of that, but the charm of the story and the chemistry between our 3 protags outweighed the awkwardness of the line delivery this time around . I don’t know why he’s like this but for this one, it kinda works

Good doc, appalled at the content.

Felicia 4.5

I watched this a second time and was a little unnerved by how much I didn’t hate Rosamund Pike’s character. A deviously smart film. Let’s the female lead be deeply “unlikeable” without admonishing her for it. Brilliantly written, truly everyone sucks here and it’s fascinating to watch

Felicia 4.0

Starkly unique while still somewhat predictable, but a roller coaster nonetheless. Unflinchingly tense but incredibly rewarding

Casey 5.0

That bonk will haunt me for the rest of my days.

Felicia 3.0

Would have been less stars if it weren’t for the last 5 minutes. It’s mean in a way that feels bad to watch. I hate the fuckin acrobatic velour tracksuit bitches so much. They’re not even fun to hate, they’re just hateable. One full star is just for Ralph Fiennes’ penis

Casey 4.0

Could’ve watched an entire movie of just Ralph’s character

Casey 1.5

I live too close to these people for comfort

Felicia 3.0

I am one of those annoying people that genuinely loves the novel Dracula, and movie adaptations are kind of always chasing that high for me. Coppola’s Dracula is the closest to a faithful adaptation I’ve seen, and even then, the romance between Dracula and Mina always rubbed me weird. This movie is kinda like “hey, what if we did Coppola’s Dracula again, but this time we leaned into the romance angle even harder.” The cast is phenomenal, the sets and costuming are ridiculously horny, but the story is a little lacking for me. Especially when it feels like Gary Oldman x2. I almost wished it had leaned more into the weird aspect, with the odd pheromone angle and the dance montage, but it strangely pulls its punches and tries in a lot of ways to be a straightforward romance, which I just don’t love for this specific story.

Loved this. Wish things were still edited like this. This topic has not changed in 20 years, we’re still talking about the same stuff.

Casey 5.0

Still a banger. Changed my perception of filmmaking when I first watched it 15 years ago and it still holds up. The world has changed so much since this was made, which makes this all the more magical.

Casey 2.5

Absolutely loved the giant reflective orb at the end. So beautiful. Unfortunately the rest of the movie is pretty boring somehow even tho this woman’s husband died and then an alien cloned his body, she fell in love with him, they banged, he impregnated her with a human/alien hybrid baby…and then he just leaves. She had to say goodbye to someone she loves twice and was left with a problem that she’s not sure she can biologically handle. Pretty fucked up tbh

Casey 4.5

Adorable. Felt like a movie made 20 years ago, in a good way.

Casey 5.0

Banger. Wish I understood all the references

Felicia 2.0

I think I don’t wanna watch any more movies where the main character is just a shitty little guy.

Casey 2.0

Not for me. Loved the music tho

Casey 0.5

Hate almost everything about this but I loved the cover

If this was the only movie I’d ever seen in my whole life I might have enjoyed it. I did have a spectacular time watching it, but it is not a good movie

Beff 4.0

Fine but a little hard to take good ole Dan Rad seriously

It was a movie for sure

Holy shit

I was sent here by the Folklands podcast episode “The Dalby Spook,” which talked about the real case, and I knew I had to watch this immediately. I was so deeply and utterly charmed right out the gate. The cast is phenomenal, the sets are gorgeous, and the story is fantastical, silly, and surprisingly heartwarming. I expected a goofy time but did not anticipate being genuinely moved by the story of a talking mongoose. What a delight of a film.

Felicia 3.0

I’m all for Sam Neill in horror, which was the draw for me. Yes, it’s cheesy, yes it’s not the most original, but it did have a couple of elements I’d never seen before, and for that, I have to respect it. I also just had a fun silly time watching, and I consider that half the battle

Beff 5.0

Funny. Dark. Good. Life raft kind of movie

Beff 5.0

Nice aesthetics and complicated relationships catharsis

Beff 3.5

Fine. I liked when that table of guys laughed at that guy that sucked
