Favorite creators

The directors, actors, and studios we keep coming back to — each film or show counted once, however many nights it took. Studios are who made a film, from TMDB. Distributors are who released it in the US, from Wikidata, which doesn't know that for every film — and leaving out the streaming services that licensed it later.

Behind the scenes

A different handful every day. Every title's is on Deep Dives.

  •  (1980) Paranapiacaba, a railway town in São Paulo state, was chosen because its constant fog and look reminded people of England, fog included.
  •  (2024) Casting Demi Moore wasn't even on the list Fargeat says she never put Moore on her wishlist because she assumed such an image-conscious star would never take the risk. Several other actresses reportedly passed. Moore responded to the script anyway, and at a Paris meeting she gave Fargeat her memoir, Inside Out. Fargeat says reading it changed her mind, and Moore said yes quickly.
  •  (1996) Skeet Ulrich briefly plays Ghostface himself. He is the one menacing Randy on the video camera just before Stu, played by Matthew Lillard, slashes Kenny's throat.
  •  (2024) Special makeup effects designer Pierre-Olivier Persin led a team of about 15 people who worked on the film for 11 months. Fargeat pushed for practical effects rather than the half-VFX approach Persin first expected.
  •  (2014) Production A year and a half of shooting, screening and reshooting Duplass and Brice skipped a full script and refined the film while shooting it. They filmed, edited, showed cuts to friends and reshot, over about a year to a year and a half. Duplass says there were 10 to 12 permutations of each scene and that they shot several alternate endings.
  •  (1996) Louis Prima, the bandleader the brothers hope will save their restaurant, never appears. He was never actually coming, because rival Pascal never called him.
